When winter hits and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be tracked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
